Kateryna Krychevsky-Rosandich

Kateryna Krychevsky-Rosandich

Kateryna Krychevsky-Rosandich was born in Kyiv in 1926. She is a grand-daughter of Vasyl Hryhorovych Krychevsky and a daughter of Vasyl Vasylovych Krychevsky and Olena Yevhenivna Krychevsky. Both of her parents were artists which was the main influence on her artistic upbringing. In 1940 she studied in art school in Kyiv but the studying was interrupted by the World War II. During Nazi occupation of Kyiv she studied privately with other art students in the studio of Ivan Chvorostetsky. Her first exhibition took place at the National Art Museum in Kyiv in 1943 as part of the Kyiv artists’ group exhibition. She received an honorable award for her works. Under the influence of her uncle, Mykola Krychevsky who lived in France at that time, Kateryna wanted to study art in Paris. In 1943 Kateryna along with her parents left Kyiv and moved to Prague where she studied art at the Industrial Art School. After being a prisoner of a Nazi labor camp, Kateryna with her family managed to escape to the American sector in Western Germany. She graduated from High School in the city of Mannheim after which she entered Heidelberg University. She showed her works at the international refugees’ exhibitions at that time. She worked with graphic design, book and calendar illustration, and design of posters and postcards. In 1949 Kateryna with her family moved to the U.S.A. In 1959 Kateryna visited Europe and stayed in Paris with her uncle, Mykola Krychevsky for five months. Upon returning from that trip she had a solo exhibition in New York at the Ukrainian Literary Art Club. In 1959 she married Slobodan Drago Rosandich.  In 1963 she gave birth to her daughter Lada. During her 70 creative years her works were shown in 54 solo exhibitions and 71 group exhibition. She also had five “father and daughter” shows together with her father, Vasyl Vasylovych Krychevsky. In 2006 a book in Ukrainian entitled: “Катерина Кричевська-Росандіч Мої Спогади” was published by Rodovid publishing house, ISBN #966-7845-29-X. In 2011 an English version of this book was published by Computoprint Corp., Clifton, NJ entitled: “Kateryna Krychevsky-Rosandich Recollections of a Life”. Works by Kateryna Krychevsky-Rosandich are in museum and private collections in Ukraine, U.S.A. and Canada. The artist lives and works in Mountain View, California.
